Despite its East Asian origin, you can easily cultivate lemongrass yourself. The relatively undemanding grass grows best in warm and sunny places, for example on the window sill. Humus-rich, nutrient-rich and deep soil that is slightly moist and permeable is ideal. Requiring a constant temperature of at least 20°C, lemongrass is perfect as a houseplant. In summer it can also be placed outside, but note that it should be protected from strong winds.
Regular harvesting promotes growth. Just be careful not to damage the bulb when cutting off the stems. Because the green part of lemongrass is rather tough and woody, it’s not necessarily edible and can be composted instead. It is best to use the lower, white colored parts of the stem for cooking.
