The dried flowers of Clitoria ternatea, also known as blue clitoria or butterfly pea, are used to make various products. In the tropical regions of Asia, which offer optimal growing conditions, the plant is considered a valuable medicinal plant. A special characteristic of the flower is its bright blue color. In Southeast Asia, it has therefore been used for centuries as a colorant, for example in the Thai dessert “Pulut Inti” or in the Malaysian “Kuhi Ketan”.
In the European Union, the flowers of the blue butterfly pea fall under the Novel Food Regulation and are only permitted as a food supplement, but not as a loose tea, for example. The product is therefore not an authorized food within the European Union.
